8th European Indoor Championships 60m hurdles Sarah initially came to prominence as a long jumper, winning numerous senior and junior titles in the mid to late 90s. She was 4th in the long jump at the 1998 World Juniors. She also twice represented GB & NI in the long jump at the European Cup (1998 & 99) and was 12th in the long jump final at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. In 2003 she switched coaches to Lloyd Cowan and her focus to sprint hurdling with great success. In 2004 she represented Team GB at the Athens Olympics. In 2005 she broke the UK 60m Hurdles indoor record with 7.96. Something of a stalwart on the British team, the Lloyd Cowan-coached athlete finally began to realise her potential at the age of 29. The Woodford Green and Essex Ladies athlete ran 12.81 in Loughborough to miss the national record by 0.01 and Claxton defied all odds by making the 2008 Olympic Games. In Beijing, Claxton showed great consistency, running 12.97 in the heats, 12.84 in the semi-finals and 12.94 in the final, where she placed eighth. In 2009 she made the World Championships team in Berlin and reached the semi-final stage finishing 8th after a season’s best of 12.86 in her heat.
